All ideologies, political, religious and spiritual are NOT created equal. Let’s get that out of the way. Private Citizens are free to belong to whatever CULT they wish even those which have a rather bizzare belief system that resembles something out of Stephen King’s ‘Children of the Corn’. But should that ‘Private Citizen’ seek high national office, the highest in our land, it is fair to ask whether and how the peculiar tenets of his CULT membership will impact his leadership.
Life’s too short to even care at all Ooh
I’m losing my mind losing my mind losing control
The fishes in the sea they’re staring at me
A wet world aches for a beat of a drum
If I could find a way to see this straight
I’d run away
To some fortune that I
Should have found by now
I’m waiting for this Cough Syrup to come down, come down
Life’s too short to even care at all
I’m coming up now coming up now out of the blue
These zombies in the park are looking for my heart
A dark world aches for a splash of the sun
-Young the Giant, “Cough Syrup” 2011
The last couple of years have challenged the American spirit in ways most of us have never would have imagined. The pain and suffering out there across America is palpable and real, leaving many of us reaching for more than cough syrup. For once perhaps the drama of the political rhetoric of our leaders does not even begin to address the depth and severity of the pain, insecurity and despair that many citizens feel across our land. Regardless of the prescriptions and solutions they offer to what ails us, to restore life I am no longer waiting for their cough syrup to come down.
Around me I have witnessed the supreme and strong, falling down, hopefully only intermittently, but still not sure. Yet, in the souls of many of my fellow Americans, however wounded or uncertain they may be, I see the ‘eye of the tiger’ looking only for a basis to rise again or maybe I am just looking in the mirror. In the words of Vince Lombardi:
“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up. The real glory is being knocked to your knees and then coming back. That’s real glory. That’s the essence of it.”
“If you have made mistakes, there is always another chance for you. You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call ‘failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down.”
Knock me down enough I say and all you are doing is training me in how to get up more proficiently. Let us give praise and thanks to those who have knocked us down for they will only make our victory even sweeter, in the end. This is the character of our people. It is written into the American DNA, yours and mine. Rest assured, the final bell has not yet rung, we will be prepared to rise and do battle in 2012. A little angel is gonna whisper in your ear: “get up you sonofabitch cause Mickey loves you”.
Cut me Mick I ain’t done fightin’ yet. This is not a time for platitudes or making cliched resolutions to toast at midnight but rather a calling to be resolute in all that we do. To all of you I hope and pray you find your splash of the sun in 2012. May you basque in it for the remainder of your days. It’s time we stop waiting for the cough syrup to come down. If we have to, maybe the answer is that we make our own.
“Ron Paul will win Iowa and finish #1 or #2 in NH. That will give him the national platform to compete against Romney. Aside from the excellent British press, the US mainstream media consistently lies about Dr Paul, denigrates his character, and basically panics that America is ready to elect a truly anti-war candidate. The so-called mainstream Republican party has abandoned core conservative values in favor of a neocon agenda of permanent war — Ron Paul will win them back to the party.”
In terms of full disclosure I am a registered Democrat likely prepared to vote again for President Obama, given the lack of a reasonable alternative. The candidacy of Ron Paul has however resonated with independents and democrats, many of whom have developed a hearty respect for Congressman Paul’s willingness to buck current Republican orthodoxy on many issues, particularly foreign policy and civil liberties. While I am not a Ron Paul supporter and do not necessarily agree with all of his policy positions, I am too concerned that a country which invests in WAR before its own people is doomed to implode or collapse entirely. Not everything America does in policing the planet can be viewed in earnest as in the best interests of America or the majority of its people; the Financial Oligarchs protecting crony capitalism yes, the people no.
While I reserve the right to render a fuller judgment upon further review and reflection of this matter, I must admit that I find the timing of the attempted take down of Ron Paul by the mainstream media rather curious; coming just as he has risen to the lead in Iowa Republican Presidential polls.
It is worth considering, however, that Paul’s policy positions may actually the least racist. In the view of many, the warfare/welfare lobby has bankrupted the wealth and soul of this nation. All the 99% have left is politicians offering targeted platitudes that don’t put food on the table, pay the rent or end their fear of what the future may bring, but nevertheless they continue their efforts to delude the population that they are still on your side. Political platitudes offered by corrupt politicians who serve as guardians of a crony capitalist system give citizens all the comfort of Jeffrey Dahmer or Hannibal Lecter whispering in your ear that he wants to eat dinner with you.
Collapse of Middle Class
America’s growing inequality and the collapsing middle class encompasses all races and nationalities; with increasingly more of our citizens finding commonality with poor rural whites and inner city blacks and disadvantaged minorities. You do not have to live in Compton or South Central to feel the pain of America’s extraction. It is being felt in the Jewish neighborhoods, the Italian-American community and in some solidly middle class all white zip codes where the decline of the professional middle class is all too evident. And it continues to be felt across white rural America across Appalachia, which conveniently garners the attention of politicians during Presidential campaigns but then gets forgotten about soon thereafter. America is eroding from the inside out. Have you heard that on the mainstream media lately? Oh yeah, I forgot they were too busy promoting yet another Kardashian.
The despair in the land is palpable. Even those who live in fear of those different than them might begin to see the world through the same lens as those who they once thought was the enemy. The changing face of expanding poverty and hopelessness just might make many Americans forget about skin color or ethnic heritage and create a new political reality for our leaders to deal with. Consider the impact of an increasingly enlightened and united voter base, with a wide swath of our people united across socioeconomic, ethnic and religious lines, blue collar workers arm in arm with white collar workers, seeing the world instead as US vs. those who prey on US with intellectually dishonest policies. This risk to the ruling class probably explains the effort to conquer and divide by stewing racial resentment. Think I am wrong? Consider the unprecedented level of racial intolerance, scape-goating of unions and government employees, and the hate and fear mongering against Muslims and immigrants.
Liberty vs. The Cult of Romney
America’s dialogue on Liberty must continue. Hence I am reluctant and thus not yet prepared to render a final judgment, dismiss him outright or cede ground to those who may want to conveniently pull the plug on Ron Paul’s candidacy at this time. Why? So that the Republican establishment and mainstream media can have their coronation of Mitt Romney, a man who is an enigma shrouded in a veil of secrecy and adorned in ‘magic underwear’ despite allegedly being so highly qualified, articulate and thoughtful? For that matter so is the devil, or at least that’s what I am told. Nevertheless, I suspect that the Cult of Romney will persist well beyond Iowa because the elders of his party see him as the most palatable demon to challenge Obama at this time, even in spite of his rather wacky Mormon beliefs. On this issue I am in accord with the view penned by the late Christopher Hitchens in Slate, political correctness be damned.
Evidence suggests that Mitt Romney’s most dangerous debate opponent just might be himself. If the Republican Party establishment wants a Mitt Romney as Sybil campaign in a 2012 ‘Say Anything’ Tour of America, I say let’s put the shape-shifter of today on stage with his opponents, Mitt Romney from last week, Mitt Romney from the 2008 Presidential campaign and Mitt Romney as Governor of Massachusetts. Ron Paul it seems at present merely shields Romney from the rise of another candidate in Iowa who may challenge him more heartily in New Hampshire and perhaps derail his candidacy for good. The media putting a pin in the ballooning Paul candidacy to bring him down out of the stratosphere in Iowa means that it is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas in the Romney household.
